Philosophies & Approaches

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY
Dr. Hogan uses an attachment style foundation to work from a variety of approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Insight Oriented Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, and Relational/Interpersonal Therapy. Dr. Hogan believes that it is through improving relationships with others, learning how to understand and cope with emotion, and understanding past and present maladaptive patterns, individuals can improve functioning and live more fulfilling lives.

CHILD THERAPY
Dr. Hogan uses an attachment style approach to working with children along with Play and Art Therapies and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. She has also been working with children and parents using the Aware Parenting approach, adopted by Dr. Aletha Solter, Ph.D., who has been traveling the world, teaching parents how to raise emotionally intelligent, non-violent children. (www.awareparenting.com)

CHILDREN'S GROUP THERAPY
Dr. Hogan has been specializing in group counseling since 1993, when she began running groups in an inpatient psychiatric hospital setting in New York. She believes in a non-punitive, more emotion focused and attachment style approach to helping children learn how to socialize and control behaviors which interfere with children having more satisfying and rewarding social experiences.
During group sessions, Dr. Hogan educates children about emotional experiences and how feelings can motivate and direct behavior. This is done through a variety of techniques, including games, inquiry, experiential learning, role playing, creative arts, and group process.
Due to this supportive and encouraging approach, children are able to increase their self-esteem, build social confidence, improve social skills, develop emotional intelligence, and improve overall functioning.

ADULT GROUP THERAPY
In adult group counseling, individuals learn how to challenge old maladaptive patterns of relating through giving and receiving feedback from others in a safe environment. Old patterns are replaced with more healthy responses and more rewarding experiences of intimacy are possible. Group members provide each other with the qualities of relationships they have longed for but never been able to attain.

ART THERAPY
Dr. Hogan is one of three Registered and Board Certified Art Therapists in Boise, Idaho. She has been practicing Art Therapy since 1993 and applying it in her work with children and adults with a wide range of diagnoses. Dr. Hogan believes that Art Therapy can provide a symbolic expression of an individual's inner life. Because some children and adults have difficulty with thinking and expressing feelings using words, Art Therapy provides an alternative to engage in self-expression using pictures. Pictures can provide the closest representation of what an individual's unique experiences are.
